Joel Lies. During the final season finale scenes, Joel and Ellie were seen driving away from the city. A confused Ellie asked where they were and why they weren’t with the Fireflies. To that end, Joel told her they were returning to Tommy and his people because the Fireflies suffered huge losses due to an outbreak. Maybe because they don’t really know either. The answer to you first question, yes. Exactly. They became hunters and stole from innocent people to stay alive. Not like David’s group. They ate people. And not in order to survive. Joel and Tommy killed people who wouldn’t give them what they needed. After a lighthearted moment of Ellie reading Joel her terrible puns, the two are ambushed by the Fireflies. When Joel awakes, Marlene reveals that Ellie could possibly provide a cure to the rest of the world, but in order to access the chemical messenger her brain produces, she’d have to be dissected — a process she wouldn’t survive.
As it turns out, Joel only told Ellie a partial truth back then. In reality, his scar comes from a failed suicide attempt. After Joel's daughter, Sarah, was shot and killed by a soldier in 2003 (in episode 1, "When You're Lost in the Darkness"), Joel was overcome by grief, and a few days later, he attempted to shoot himself in the head.

I feel like Joel kills innocent people in game, frequently. Some of the hunters are just guys trying to survive in a dangerous world -- doesn't stop Joel from murdering them, usually brutally. todd330 Joel • 8 yr. ago. If they are trying to kill you to survive, they are as innocent as you are when you kill them.
